If you were water

By Sooyoung Kim, written on Feb 17, 2020

If you were water flowing
down and down

Pass by stream,
Past the river
I Hope that you reach to the sea

It's also okay for you to go to the clouds in the sky,
and become a sweet rain

I hope that you always move.

If you have to stay in a bowl

I hope that:
you are included In a bowl that should be put in

I pray earnestly that:
you don’t be rotten
In the stagnant water

Foods to increase serotonin in our body

Some people (Depression, Insomnia, Fibromyalgia, Migraine and other headaches, severe premenstrual syndrome etc) take tryptophan supplements but maybe intake foods to increase serotonin in our body!!!

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that's important for mood, sleep regulation, and appetite

How much tryptophan per day?Tryptophan is found in both plant and animal proteins, although animal proteins tend to have more and it's easier for your body to break it down and use it. Animal-based proteins like meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese, and yogurt are called complete proteins because they have all nine of the essential amino acids, including tryptophan. Some plant-based proteins like quinoa, soy, and buckwheat (groats) are also complete proteins that have tryptophan.Only small amounts are necessary for healthy nutrition in most people. In the U.S., the average person takes in about 826 milligrams a day of tryptophan, while the estimated average requirement (EAR) for most adults is 4-5 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day. For a 70-kilogram (154-pound) adult, that's about 280-350 milligrams a day. The EAR for infants and children up to about 2 years old is 13-17 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day.

Me in Others

For my team, while working at ExosomePlus, Inc,
Feb, 14, 2020, Written by Sooyoung Kim

I see myself in others.

He has the image that I want to have.
Both firmness and leisure in his years

Another he
has the image of my past and future.
He is not perfect, but confident, so I like him.

Another
makes me reflect on the my image that I did not have in my past

She
has passion and responsibility for work so
I cannot dislike her even if she did make mistakes.

Another she
has perfect sense, sincerity, and accuracy
Which gives me the joy of working together with her.

I see myself from my colleagues up, down, left, and right at work,
and I see my past mistakes

Learning how to work together and
getting used to each others, which
is becoming one team with trust

Even if nothing remains later
This moment is tearfully happy.

The River

Dear Dr. Pyo, March, 20, 2020, Written by Sooyoung Kim

A river is calm.
On the calm river,
the water flows quietly.
We can ’t notice outside the river
where the water moves so fast

A small stone thrown on the calm water
It bounces out of the surface of the water.
It only creates small ripples.

No matter how many stones are thrown on the calm river
the water on the river flows without stopping

There are laughters
with the sound of water flowing by the river

Women Scientist and leadership

10 years ago from now in 2014, I worked as one of KWiSE (Korean-American Women in Science and Engineering)-NIH (National Institute of Health) symposium committee members. Now, I’m at San Diego. I am serving the San Diego chapter, KWiSE as a vice president. I thought that I’m all the time young, but I’m getting old. This year, President Kang and all other organization members were great. They, all members, and speakers made our annual meeting so great.
Here SanDiego has lots of blue — sea and sky — and here is a beautiful place, maybe near heaven.

I hope to introduce one of mentoring books titled “Making Real Connections”. The book fits with all levels of working women, starting, middle, and even leadership. The book is one of series -Harvard business review, and has quite bunch of advices based on research.

Returning to Origins

The book 원점 was recently published in South Korea and has been translated into English. Currently, Korean book and English version, e-book of “원점 / Returning to Origins” are available. Some poems are here, but some others you could find there.

Most poems in section 1 was written immediately after my third near-death experience, and the poems in section 2 was written originally for my first daughter Jina when she was three years old. Now I have another daguther, Grace, and I hope to share with my and other duaghters. Life is not easy at all. Maybe harder to most girls than boys. I hope that these poems give some peace and cheerup.

Ebook is available at Amazon, and Korean book is available at INDIEPUB

Soon, paper book will be availble at Amazon.

The journey of life starts at an origin.

Both long and short journeys start from origins and return to the origin.

At the age of half-century, I stand again at my starting point, look back on my past origins ahead of another journey, and leave a trace for daughters.

Sulfanilamide Disaster

Aug 29, 2024

Incident

More than 100 people after using a drug – Elixir Sulfanilamide, died.

Sulfanilamide, a drug used to treat streptococcal infections with dramatic curative effects, and safely used in tablet and powder form. In June 1937,  S.E. Massengill Co., in Bristol, Tenn., manufactured the drug in liquid form with diethylene glycol. No toxicity and pharmacological studies had been done on the new sulfanilamide preparation. Diethylene glycol (antifreeze) is a deadly poison.

On Oct 11, 1937, the American Medical Association (AMA) received incidental report from physician in Tulsa, Oklahoma, that an unfamiliar sulfanilamide compound was responsible for a number of deaths, and  AMA laboratory isolated diethylene glycol as the toxic ingredient and immediately issued a warning through newspapers, and radio that Exlixir Sulfanilamide was toxic.

Next year 1938, FDA set out to make sure all of the drug was retrieved. 239 FDA inspectors and chemists was assigned to the task, and state and local health officials joined the search, and newspapers and radio stations continued to issue warnings.

Chaos

In some drug stores, the elixir had been sold without prescriptions to purchasers whose names the druggiest did not know. In other cases, doctors had incomplete records, or none at all- of the names and address of patients for whom they had prescribed.  Even one East St. Louise woman told an inspector she had destroyed the drug. The inspector persisted in his questions how did she destroy. Her answer was that she had thrown the bottle out the window into an alley. The inspector found the bottle still unbroken, still containing enough elixir to kill any child.

A South Carolina doctor told an inspector that he had dispensed the medicine, but none had died, but the inspector found all his patients had died after taking the elixir.

Of 240 gallons manufactured and distributed, 234 gallons and 1 pint was retried.

Victims

Many of them were kids, treated for sore throats. All exhibited similar characteristic of failed kidney, stoppage of urine, abdominal pain, nausea, vomitting, stupor, convulsions.

However, the firm was not illegal, because in 1937, the law did not prohibit the sale of dangerous, untested, or poisonous dugs. Dr. Samual Evans Massengill, the firm’s owner said: My chemists and I deeply regret the fatal results, but there was no error in the manufacture of the product. We have been supplying a legitimate professional demand and not once could have foreseen the unlooked-for results. I do not feel that there was any responsibility on our part.” The Chief Chemist, Harold Watkins committed suicide after learning of the effects of his latest concoction.

1938 Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act

FDA Commissioner Walter Campbell pressed for better federal regulation of drugs, and pointed out how the inadequacy of the law had contributed to the disaster.

The Elixir disaster hastened enactment of the 1938 Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. New Drug section, added to prevent such tragedies, gave the US a new system of drug control which provided superior protection and 25 years later, this Act saved the Nation from an even greater global drug tragedy— a thalidomide disaster

In the 1938 Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, requires perform animal safety tests.

However, currently, that requirement, especially cosmetics is not mandatory, if the company provides an evidence of the safety
